Smith was born on Sept. 21, 1920 in Rochester, Minnesota and moved to Fruita, CO and graduated from FMHS. His parents, Homer and Edith Smith, owned Smith Cafe in Circle Square. Smith played as QuarterBack for Mesa, and in spring of 1941 Smith transferred to Boulder Tex Mall to learn advancced flying. Joined service after Pearl Harbor, flew in a P-38 at the Williams Field in Arizona. Transferred to 26th Photographic Squadron, 6th Reconnaissance Group and was moved to Persion Field, Colorado Springs Fall 1943. After training at Persion, he left for the Pacific Theatre on October 28, 1944. Declared dead on February 22, 1946, as a MIA. memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines.
