Description
Photo of Grand Junction Sugar Beet Factory 1899 - 1929. It opened in 1899 as the Colorado Sugar Manufacturing Company and was the first sugar beet factory in Colorado. In 1916 it was sold to Holly Sugar Company, which operated the company until its closure in 1929. The factory was reopened for intermittent periods by Holly Sugar until 1943. In 1950, the factory was purchased by Climax Uranium Company, which processed uranium and dumped its tailings in the Colorado River until its closure in 1970. More than 300,000 tons of uranium tailings from the plant between 1953 and 1966 were used as building materials and construction backfill in Grand Junction. Only a small structure remains, which is used as a warehouse for the city of Grand Junction.
