Holly Sugar Company

About
The factory of a Colorado business that processed locally grown sugar beets, turning them into sugar. It was located near the Colorado River between 9th and 12th Streets, and the building still stands. The factory began operation in 1899, financed by wealth Denver investors. After 3 years of failed crops and little profit, the Western Sugar and Land Company bought the factory, and its fortunes gradually improved. Holly Sugar, who eventually moved their operations to Delta County in 1933, bought the company in 1916.

In 1922, Holly Sugar Company acquired all the capital stock of the Colorado Sugar Manufacturing Company in Grand Junction. When Holly acquired the company, they adopted a profit sharing plan with growers, resulting in increased beet planting.
The Grand Junction factory was operated until 1933, when it was closed because of curly top, a beet disease which attacked the crop. The facility was dismantled in 1943. After the closure, beets from the Grand Junction area were processed in the Delta plant.
