Photo of the king of Iraq, Faisal II

Photograph -- Black-and-White Photograph

Identifier:
2023.7.14
Description
Black and white framed photo of the kid king of Iraq, Faisal II when he stopped in Grand Junction for 10 minutes on his train tour of the United States (he was riding the California Zepher). The king is wearing a suit and tie, and is smiling for the photo while holding his personal Contax-S 35 mm. He met with reporter Mary Louis Giblin (not pictured). During this tour, he had already visited President Harry Truman and the Secretary of State Dean Acheson in Washington and would visit Hollywood entertainment figures in California.
Less than 6 years after this photo, Faisal, his uncle, Crown Prince Abdul-Illah, and several members of the royal family were machine gunned in a coup d'etat, ending the Hashemite monarchy and Iraq becoming a republic.

Photo has a black border, white matting, and black frame.
