Description from exhibit panel: "In Alferd Packer's version of the campsite murders, he said he returned from a scouting trip to find passage to the Gunnison cow camp. The camp was silent and four men had been slain. In a fit of insanity, Shannon Bell attacked Packer with a hatchet. Packer reacted quickly and fired two shots that killed Bell. Trapped in the snowy mountains with no food, Packer was forced to cannibalize his companions -- and action he regretted the rest of his life."
