A note taped to the backing board, and signed by the artist, gives the name of the painting, and this blurb:

Consider that old railroad lantern, it's legacy in the movement of consumer goods. Held by the brakeman, switchman or trainman over all of the years. . .it has controlled more tonnage over the railroad than all the movement of goods, combined, throughout all history of transportation. One can't help but feel that old lanterns [sic] presense [sic].
