UINTAH RAILWAY, the Gilsonite Route.
Gilsonite, the fore runner [sic] of Asphalt was named for SAM GILSON after his discovery of a large vein in western Colorado SAM GILSON found it in 1885 and realizing its value, while he experimended [sic] with it, he also promoted its use. By 1903 it proved too large a vein for mule teams, hence railroad operations began. In 1926 the big BALDWIN articulateds arrived, two of them for carrying up to 1150 tons of gilsonite per train load.
