Color illustrated postcard depicting a "Smudge Scene" in the Grand Valley, Colorado, date unknown. No correspondence. Two men are depicted pouring a fluid (possibly oil) on some burning logs. Smudge fires were usually created as a slow-burning, smoke producing fire to drive away insects and prevent orchards from frosting over, which is likely what this illustration is depicting. A technique was pioneered in Grand Junction by W.C. Scheu to use "smudge pots" to warm orchards in 1907. Published by J.M. Cameron.Related people
