Born on June 22, 1867 in Winona, Minnesota. Came to grand Junction in 1880 and moved to Palisade in 1896. He married Carrie Ann (Purdy) Mars in October 1894 and had three children, Goldie M. Smith, Bert Mars, and Charles Mars. He was fire chief for the Palisade fire department for several years and was a former manager of the Price Irrigation system and worked at the Palisade hydro-electric plant for several years. He operated the first power combine in the Grand Valley and was active in the W.O.W. and the I.O.O.F. He passed away on Tuesday July 9, 1946.
