He was born in Illinois. His father, Ezra Jaynes, was a Civil War veteran and suffered gunshot wounds in the war. Doctors advised him to move to a dryer climate for his health. Oscar went with his father to Grand Junction in 1891, and together they bought land in the First Fruitridge area. Oscar returned to Illinois to marry his childhood sweetheart in 1899. During that time he worked as a pharmacist and taught school. They returned to Grand Junction in 1905. In 1907, he bought land in Clifton, Colorado, where they cleared sagebrush and established a farm at a homestead now known as 3269 F Road. Father of Oscar Winfield Jaynes Jr. Uncle of Velma E. (Borschell) Budin. Brother of Edith Jaynes and son of Ezra Jaynes.
