Simonson was born in Grand Junction, CO, February 12, 1911. He graduated from Grand Junction High School. He worked for The Daily Sentinel and was known in the area for his original woodcuts. Simonson moved to Denver, CO, in 1936 to head the Colorado state Writers' Project, sponsored by the Work Projects Administration. Under Simonson's direction, 17 books were published. Simonson married Louise Odale in 1943 in Los Angeles, CA. Simonson and his wife operated the Sidale book publishing company in Los Angeles. Simonson served in the U.S. Navy during WWII.
