About
Paul (Johnson) Pletka was born in San Diego, CA in 1946. He moved to Grand Junction, CO when he was 11 years old. His mother was Anna Marie Hosier and father was Howard Paul Johnson. He attended the University of Arizona briefly on an art scholarship but returned to Grand Junction and attended Mesa College and later, Colorado State University. Pletka worked for the Museums of Western Colorado's exhibit department in the 1970's and painted a Fremont Culture village as a backdrop for a Fremont Era artifacts exhibition. He developed a unique artistic style during the 1980's and was soon noticed by Southwest art gallery owners. Today, Pletka is a world-renowned Southwest painter of neo-surrealist Native American Culture.
Pletka was his maternal father's last name, it is unknown when he started using it as his last name instead of Johnson.
