About
Robert Ottokar Lindneux was born in New York City in 1871. He traveled to Europe and enrolled in the Art Academy in Dusseldorf, Germany. He later attended the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, France, and the Munich Academy.
After attending a Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show in Paris in 1898, he fell in love with the American West. Lindneux moved to Montana in 1898 and worked as a trapper, horse wrangler, and cowboy. He befriended another frontier painter, Charles M. Russell, and they shared an art studio in Montana.
Lindneux is known for his large western paintings, which include his famous portrait of Buffalo Bill, and other well-known western figures.
Some of the graphite drawings in the MWC collection are preliminary sketches for his paintings.
