Dr. Rex Ingraham was born March 25, 1914, on a ranch near Grand Junction, Colorado. After attending Mesa State College and Western State College in Colorado, he transferred to USC Ostrow School of Dentistry to complete his B.S. and D.D.S. degrees, and graduated with high honors in 1941. He was offered a full-time instructor position with the Operative Dentistry department of the school. He served as a chair of the Operative Dentistry department from 1946-1969, during which time he authored hundreds of research articles/papers, and two acclaimed textbooks, An Atlas of Cast Gold Procedures and Gold Foil and Rubber Dam Procedures. He was Associate Dean for Clinical Education 1975-1976, and was a chair of the Restorative Dentistry department 1975-1979. He retired in 1981. In retirement, he continued to raise funds for the dental school for 20 more years, his efforts recognized in the naming of the operative dental clinic, "Rex Ingraham Clinic". His encouragement of ultra high speed instrumentation led him to be known as the "Father of Restorative Dentistry". Ingraham earned countless academic and professional honors throughout his career. In 1966, USC named him Distinguished Professor of Dentistry and named him Distinguished Professor Emeritus two years after his retirement. The Academy of Dentistry International named him International Dentist of the Year in 1983.
