Professionally known as S. C. Hoel, Sidney Clinton Hoel, Sr., was born April 18, 1875, in Rudd, Iowa. He married Lillie May Moore in 1899 in Minnesota. They had three children, Sidney Clinton Jr. (b.1900), Lillie May (b.1901), and Ruth Eleanor (b.1904). Before arriving in Grand Junction, Colorado, Hoel founded a business college in Montrose, Colorado. Hoel founded and was president of Hoel Business College located in Grand Junction, Colorado, in 1906 or 1909. The school later became Hoel-Ross Business College, then Ross Business College, then was absorbed into Grand Junction Junior College. He sold his interest in the college to M. M. Due and R. E. Tope in 1927. He then entered the oil business, working as president of an oil company. During his time in Grand Junction, Hoel was active in the Methodist Church, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Lions Club. Hoel died in 1963 in a Grand Junction, Colorado, nursing home, after spending his retirement in Arizona.
