About
George Francis Hillyer was born May 26, 1913, in Grand Junction, Colorado, to parents Carl A. and Winifred Hillyer. He attended Mesa College and the University of Denver. In 1937, he married Catherine Ruth Slane. He was a writer and newspaper reporter, working for the Topeka State Journal for several years. He later worked as director of savings bonds for the U.S. Treasury Department in Kansas until 1949, when he moved back to Denver, CO. There, he worked as editor and publisher of the East Denver Journal until 1958, and then for Olinger Mortuaries until 1962, when he joined the Agriculture Department in Washington, D. C., as a journalist. In 1973 he retired and moved back to Denver. Hillyer was a member of the American Legion Post, the National Press Club, and was a charter member and past president of the East Denver Kiwanis Club. He passed away in 1977.
