Mrs. Jennie Evalina (Steele) Crisman was born in Denver, CO, December 14, 1872 to parents Joseph and Rebecca Steele. The family moved to Mesa County in 1877 and were pioneers of Fruita, CO. She married Hilarian Charles Wagner in 1893. After his passing in 1912, she married Mr. L. L. Crisman in 1922. Mrs. Crisman was the Gold Star Mother of the local American Legion Post, named for her son, Harold R. Wagner, the first Fruita area man killed in WWI. She was also a Gold Star Grandmother, having lost a grandson in WWII. Mrs. Crisman was a member of the LDS Church and had been active in a number of social organizations, including the Legion Auxiliary, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Daughters of Union Veterans, the Neighbors of Woodcraft, Rebekahs, Progressive Womans Club, Eastern Star, and Territorial Daughters. She considered herself to be the last surviving member of the Territorial Daughters organization, comprised of women born in Colorado while it was still a territory. She moved to Denver, CO, following the death of her husband in 1956 to be near her daughter and passed away at a hospital in Denver, after a few days of illness at the age of 87.
