About
After graduating from Jefferson College in 1847, Crawford taught school in Kentucky and Mississippi (1847-1848). He studied law from 1848-1851, and was then editor of the Clinton Democrat (1851-1852), a clerk in the post office in Washington, D.C. (1853-1856), and was a lawyer in Kansas beginning in 1857.
He founded the town of Fort Scott, and was editor of the Kansas Farmer.
In 1861, he was elected governor of Kansas, but because the election was not held in the proper year, it was declared illegal (and he never became governor).
He started the Daily Monitor, Fort Scott's first newspaper.
In 1876, he moved to Colorado, and purchased land as the railroad expanded, as he had in Kansas, and founded the towns of Grand Junction and Delta.
