Born in Colorado Springs to Thomas Francis Callahan and Johanna Hurley Callahan. He was the youngest of 8 children. The family moved to Grand Junction in 1909 and his father (T.F.) started the Callahan Funeral Home in 1910.
Bill was one of the first students to attend St. Joseph's School when it opened in 1917. He graduated from Grand Junction High School and attended Mesa College and the University of Colorado. He graduated from Hohenschuh-Carpenter College of Embalming in St. Louise, MO in 1936. He then joined the funeral director. After his father's death in 1944, Bill and his sister, Virginia Stevenson, took over the operation of Callahan Funeral Home. The name was changed to Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in 1956 when Weston P. Edfast became a third partner. Bill retired in 1979 after selling the firm to his daughter Janice Callahan, and to Mike Blackburn.
