La Court Hotel

About
The LaCourt Hotel, located on Grand Junction, Colorado's Main and Second Streets (where the Grand Junction Convention Center now stands), was purchased by William Frederick Buthorn in 1907 upon his family's arrival from Nebraska. Buthorn was a German immigrant and had previously managed the Schlitz European Hotel in Lincoln. He was known as a good host. The LaCourt had good food, used sterling silver in the dining room, was decorated with oriental rugs, and had a Steinway grand piano in the lobby that anyone could play. The LaCourt hosted the Rotary Club’s meetings and events. The Daily Sentinel held an annual luncheon for all of its correspondents from the Western Slope at the hotel, which was one of the only facilities large enough to support such a gathering. The hotel owned a surrey with a fringe on top that would pick up guests at the train station. Performers coming through town often stayed at the hotel, including opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink.
