"The historic Lowell School was built in 1925 as an elementary school, and later became the R-5 High School in 1971. The Downtown Development Authority (DDA) bought the building in 2015 after R-5 relocated. In 2021 REgeneration Development partnered with the DDA to “Repair, Restore, and Reactivate” the Lowell School. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a contributing structure to the North 7th St. Historic District. The historic features of the building are being restored, and the Lowell Village Commons (front lawn of the school) is public open space for all. The Lowell School now hosts several small businesses, local artists, and civic non-profits.
