Description
Coiled Bowl Basket. Made 1853 By "Now Extinct Tulare Tribe." According to gift deed, the basket was made in 1853 by the "Tulare Tribe" of California, now "extinct," possibly referring to the Tule River Tribe, Yokuts, Western Mono/Monache. The basket is a polychrome, wide-mouthed bowl. The main weave of the body is tan/straw colored reed, decorated with dark brown and red woven embellishments. Two double helix strands are woven around the circumference of the bowl, pixelated in small rectangles of black reed. Three groups of three small red stars of four rectangles placed in a North-East-South-West pattern stacked vertically. Alternating with these patterns, there are three more groups of red decoration. These patterns are also arranged vertically, but 9 red rectangles are arranged in a diamond pattern stacked in groups of two. The very center bottom of the bowl has a small opening. Stickers at the bottom of the basket labeled "#57" and "5488" removed and added to accession folder.
