Historical artifact -- Specimen, Animal

Identifier:
E938
Description

Male desert black swallowtail (Papilio polyxenes rudkini) - a subspecies of butterfly - specimen, pressed inside of an almost flat, rectangular, plastic container. There is a raised "bubble" in the center of the plastic that houses the body of the specimen.

Original label identifies the specimen as "[Male] Papilio Bairdi Rudkini" - an outdated scientific name - and suggests that it was collected in the Providence Mountains in California. The specimen is labeled as a topotype, indicating that it was collected at the subspecies' type locality but is not one of the subspecies' established type specimens.
