Historical artifact -- Specimen, Animal

Identifier:
E920
Description
Male northwestern fritillary (Argynnis hesperis) - a species of butterfly - specimen, pressed inside of an almost flat, rectangular, plastic container. There is a raised "bubble" in the center of the plastic that houses the body of the specimen.

Original label identifies the specimen as "[Male] Argynnis Atlantis Nikias" - seemingly a historic name for the subspecies Argynnis hesperis nausicaa - and suggests it was collected at Pinon Mesa, Colorado. Although A. hesperis does occur in the area, that particular subspecies is not known to and, as such, is less likely to be the correct identity for this specimen.
