Historical artifact -- Specimen, Animal

Identifier:
E912
Description
Male callippe fritillary (Argynnis callippe) - a species of butterfly - specimen, pressed inside of an almost flat, rectangular, plastic container. There is a raised "bubble" in the center of the plastic that houses the body of the specimen.

Original label identifies the specimen as "[Male] Argynnis Nevadensis" - a historic name for the subspecies A. c. nevadensis - and suggests that it was collected at Pinon Mesa, Colorado. While A. callippe does occur in Colorado, it seems that A. c. nevadensis in particular may not, and that specimens from Colorado may not be likely to belong to that subspecies.
