Historical artifact -- Specimen, Animal

Identifier:
E632
Description

Male oreas comma (Polygonia oreas) - a species of butterfly - specimen, pressed inside of an almost flat, rectangular, plastic container. There is a raised "bubble" in the center of the plastic that houses the body of the specimen.

Original label identifies the specimen as "[Male] Polygonia Silenus" - seemingly an outdated scientific name for the subspecies P. o. silenus - and suggests that it was collected at Pinon Mesa, Colorado. Although P. oreas does occur in Colorado, P. o. silenus may not be the true subspecies represented by this specimen - P. o. satellow seems much more likely based on the locality, but this is still somewhat unclear.
