Historical artifact -- Specimen, Animal

Identifier:
E569
Description
Female anicia checkerspot (Euphydryas anicia) - a species of butterfly - specimen, pressed inside of an almost flat, rectangular, plastic container. There is a raised "bubble" in the center of the plastic that houses the body of the specimen.

Original label identifies the specimen as "[Female] Euphydryas Anicia Alena" and suggests that it was collected at Black Ridge, Colorado. Although E. anicia is native to Colorado, the locality indicates that E. a. alena may not be the most likely identity for this specimen - E. a. wecoeut appears to be the prevalent subspecies in Mesa County, but this is not entirely clear.
