a. Letter on lined loose-leaf paper, front only. Written in pencil. Dated March 23, 1923. Rock Springs, WY. Letter to Mary Maddux Greenley (Optimo, NM) from Ralph Maddux (Rock Springs, WY).

"Dear Mary how are you and the babies wintering hope you haven't any such winter as we are having here I am still freighting I thought I would be through by the first of February but the snow is so deep I had to haul 2 more ears of corn no signs of spring yet I cut my team down to 6 now and have a wagon on".

"both ends and a sled in the middle have to transfer 2 times I run the sled about 10 miles this is an awful country for wind I could run a sled clear through only for the wind blowing the road bare in so many places I have my cooster tied to a post so it won't [illegible] and haul hay for the horses no more hobbling or wrangling but I have to make it to camp if it takes half the night"

"when I was pulling the cooster I could stop at any patch of grass I will be glad when this job is over as is is the same thing over and over get up in the morning get breakfast feed and harness a bunch of horses and pull all day stop and stop and unhook blankets and feed get supper go to bed never have time to do any laundry write letters or do anything I am going home in June if not before"

"I sure have lots of work to do there all over the place is something started but not finished and other things to be started I sent my saddle to Rifle this winter and had it overhauled it is as good as new now no Mary I know nothing about Washington they say it is a rainy timbered country I am sleeping so good life and good luck Ralph % Rife Ranch, Rock Springs Wyo."

e. Envelope made from white paper. Postmarked Bitter Creek, WY, March 25, 1923, 5pm. Sent to "Mrs. A. R. Greenley (Mary Maddux), Optimo, New Mex.". Sent from "Ralph Maddux % Rife Ranch Rock Springs, Wyoming". In the top left corner written in black ink is "ans".
