Description
a. Letter on pink stationery paper, front and back. Written in black ink. Dated March 15, 1925. McPhee, CO. Letter to Mary Maddux Greenley (Casper, WY) from Leona Maddux (McPhee, CO).

"Dear Mary and family, I wonder why we never hear from you people no more maybe it's because we are both waiting for the other to write. I wrote you while we were in Dolores, but never did get any answer. So I guess you never got it. We came over here the first of November to work at the New Mexico Lumber Co. sawmill at McPhee, about seven miles from Dolores. We don't like it here at all. Laurence says he never hated a job like he does this the first thing that happened he cut his leg the second day he work. And I guess he'll be a cripple the rest of his life. After he cut his leg they took him off of Millright work, and since that he has been doing everything. The last few days he has been filing on the circular side. But he has no idea what he'll do tomorrow. I guess we won't be here much longer any way. We thot perhaps while we were this close to New Mexico we would drive down and see your father and brother. You know which way to go from Durango? or if you don't what is his post office? We won't have very much time to spend down there so don't want to take it up hunting then. We don't know exactly where we will go from here but probably back to Montrose. We have lived in a tent all winter for you couldn't get a house here for love nor money. We really didn't mind it as we were fixed up real comfortable. A few nights it got pretty cold but we never suffered with it. Laurence worked outside during the coldest weather and he nearly froze. Will you find out how it is for work where you are, such as for carpenters, or is there any saw-mills in your vicinity? What are the wages around the oilfields. If things don't look promising in Montrose, now we are moving, we are going to move, as we might as well work one place as another long as we have to work. We thot perhaps we might go to Denver then on to Casper and see you, and work awhile or possibly stay for awhile. I am sending you a couple pictures of Ralph. The one by the car is real good of him, but not of me. He weighs 21 2/3 lbs. he was square, but lately he is getting taller. Write as soon as convenient and tell us about the address or where to go to find your father as we may be leaving here any time. Leona Laurence + baby".

Leona Maddux is sister-in-law to Mary Maddux Greenley, married to Mary's older brother Laurence Maddux.

McPhee, CO was a logging town located in Montezuma County, Colorado. It no longer exists today.
