Description
a. Letter on pink stationery paper, front and back. Written in black ink. Dated May 2, 1925. Montrose, CO. Letter to Mary Maddux Greenley (Casper, WY) from Leona Maddux (Montrose, CO).

"Dear Mary and family, I bet you think I'm as slow as anything possibly could be, but they say better late than never. We left McPhee shortly after we got your letter, and didn't have time to write before we left. Then when we got here Ralph had the measles he was very sick for about five weeks but he's fine now except for a 'rattling' in his throat and a cough. But I'm glad he has them and we are over with it. We had a lovely trip coming over here, the first two days it stormed and the roads were terrible, but after we got into Utah we just went asailing. We went throu Monticello, Moab, Mack, and Grand Junction. We are working for Herman Darling again. He gets 60¢ per hour here. We average $36 a week. I guess we will be going up to Hanks Creek before very long (there's where we were when first married). Mr. Darling got his hand in the plower and lost all his fingers except a little piece of his little finger and a little piece of the thumb. We think some of starting a box mile ourselves or else going to the coast. For there's nothing here in the winter. We left to early in the spring to go and see your father as the pass was snowed in. Cars had never been to Durango then unless they went by the way of Shiprock N.M. If we go to the coast this fall we plan to make him a visit. They say the late freeze has got lots of the early fruit here so don't suppose we will have very much early fruit. The hay seems to be quite late too. Do you still do lots of crocheting? Laurence often speaks of your fancy work. It seems like I never have time to do much here lately. I made four yokes this winter and embroidered three linen dresses. I'm making a toile dress now. I don't particular care about the pattern but it's the latest out and lots wear them. It's 1 1/4 yds. wide at bottom. I must close and get supper for my men. I have boards I almost forgot to tell you the dimensions of my house it's 10' x 12'. Laurence says it's a good thing he works all the time for if he didn't we would have to take turn about being inside as there wouldn't be room for us both. He works from 6am until 9pm lots of times. Write soon and often, Leona + family".

b. Envelope made from the same white paper. Postmarked Montrose, CO, May 5, 1925 at 3 pm. Sent to Mrs. A. R. Greenley (Mary Maddux), 935 St. Mary's Street, Casper, WY. Written on the upper left corner of the front of the envelope in blue ink is "Leona" and in black pen is "ans".
