Watercolor of Uintah Railroad at Mack, C WATERCOLOR OF UINTAH RAILROAD AT MACK, CO The Uintah Railway carried gilsonite, a glossy black hydrocarbon mineral used in paints, inks, asphalt and beer keg linings, from the mines along the northwest Colorado/eastern Utah border to the terminus at Mack, just west of Grand Junction. This narrow gauge line, which operated from 1904 to 1939, featured some of the sharpest curves and steepest grades in railroad history.

Today little is Left of the town of Atchee at the base of Baxter Pass in northwest Colorado. Yet it once was an important maintenance facility for the Uintah Railway. This is a view of Atchee in the late 1920s.
