Painting of a Native American woman holding a basket of cherries watching a young girl smash cherries.
Month of July, part of the "Indian Calendar" Series by Jack Roberts.

"This was a busy times for the squaws and their daughters. Buffalo meat was dried and smoked, tallow was rendered and chokecherries were mashed to pulp on grinding stones, or metates. After the meat was thoroughly smoked, it was pulverized on grinding stones and mixed with the tallow and chokecherry pulp. The mixture was pressed into small cakes and stored in parfleche containers. This was the non-perishable staple of the Indian diet: pemmican." (quote by Jack Roberts)
