Description
Identified in gift deed as a basket cover, found on the Grand Mesa by Steven Shain. Shain writes that he found the basket cover in a camping area near Mesa Lakes while digging a fire pit. Shain reports that he found the object about 1 foot below the surface. The basket has black discoloration on the side both on the top and inside the top. The basket is woven with dark brown material and the top is woven in bright orange with five dots of white surrounded by a dark brown/black arranged around the center. There are 5 small dark brown/black triangles, about three rows tall, on the outside rim pointing towards the center. The open rim of the object has two openings between the top row and a wrapped handle, about the same size as the other rows of weaving. Possibly Ute origin.
