Description
Photograph of a brick two-story building with a storefront in the front and a side entrance, identified as built in January 1903 by Ernest Hampton and J.D. Secor, later called the Hugus Building and the Palisade Mercantile building in Palisade, CO. Six men stand in front of the building, looking at the camera. A lantern hangs next to the main entrance from a support pole. The two men on either side of this pole have been identified as J.D. Secor and Ernest Hampton, the two men who built the building. The building is bordered by deciduous trees on the left side and a dirt road in the front. An unoccupied horse and buggy is parked to the left of the building. A horse, called Old Bally, and wagon driven by a man identified as Ed Morgan is visible on the road in front of the building.

Attached to the bottom of the photo is a piece of paper with a typed caption that reads, "Hugus Building- 1903 / Built by Ernest Hampton and J D Secor / L to R Ledy Morgan- unknown - J D Secor- Ernest Hampton-unknown- unknown- Hall Ely / on wagon Ed Morgan and Old Bally". 

Written in pencil on the back of the photo is a handwritten message that reads, "Built by / Ernest Hampton + / J D Secor 1903". Below that in blue pen is the message, "later called Hugus Bldg / Built by - / Ernest Hampton and J. D. Secor Jan 1903 / L. to R - / 1. Ledy Morgan / 2. / 3. J. D. Secor / 4. Ernie Hampton / 5. / 6. / 7. Hall Ely / on wagon / Ed Morgan and Old Bally -".
