Description
Postcard photograph of smudging scene from the foot of Mt. Lincoln, Palisade Colo. 5:30 AM. Shows rows of burning smudge pots in the fruit orchards.

Written on the back of the postcard in black ink is the message, "The skates are beauties. This picture represents the way the people light fires in the spring when the cold snaps come, to keep the fruit from freezing. It is a great sight and a mighty anxious time for the fruit growers. Miss M. [illegible], Palisade, Colo."

Smudging was a method of protecting/heating the fruit crops from late frosts.
