Sharps 1853 Model Slanting Breech RifleThis rifle, an early version of the Sharps percussion single shot, was manufactured sometime between 1856 to 1858, indicated by the Sharpes Rifle Co. mark on the barrel. Made in .36, .44, and .52 calibers. These sporting rifles were produced chiefly for the civilian market.
A few rifles (including this one), were modified by slight improvements prior to production of the Sharps 1855 model. This version is also known as the John Brown model, because 200 of these arms were used by abolitionist John Brown. (from exhibit label)
